Check out my guest blog about researching horror on Samhain Publishing author Brian Moreland’s Dark Lucidity website.

August 16th, 2014

“What does research matter in horror?
You’d think doing research as an author would be less important for a horror novel than other literary genres, because monsters and the supernatural aren’t real—or at least some think so. But in my opinion, the more realistic the everyday details, technology, ordinance, hardware, professional behavior, and science, the more the reader believes what’s going on, increasing their involvement in the story. Even though the reader knows a horror story is unreal, I believe the greater the verisimilitude, that on an unconscious level people believe what is happening just a little bit more—and it’s that much more scary. It all comes down to suspension of disbelief…”

My new science fiction monster novel, IT WAITS BELOW, from Samhain Publishing hits the shelves in three weeks!

August 12th, 2014

“It waits no more! In the 1800s, an asteroid carrying an extraterrestrial life form crashed to earth and sunk a Spanish treasure ship. Now, a trio of salvage experts dives a three-man sub to the deepest part of the ocean to recover the sunken gold. There, they confront a nightmarish alien organism beyond comprehension, which has waited for over a century to get to the surface. It finally has its chance. As their support ship on the surface is ambushed by deadly modern-day pirates, the crew of the stranded sub battles for their very lives against a monster no one on Earth has seen before.”

Available for pre-order in trade paperback and eBook on amazon or directly from the publisher at: http://store.samhainpublishing.com/waits-below-p-73600.html.

CONTAINMENT is back in print! My zombies-in-space graphic novel published by IDW is getting a second printing in hardcover and digital editions by SST Publications.

July 25th, 2014

The eye-popping artwork is by Nick Stakal, and the book has an introduction by the legendary Wes Craven.

The story takes place on a manned NASA space ship millions of miles from Earth, when a terrifying malfunction occurs in the cryogenic hypersleep pods containing the hibernating astronauts, turning most of the crew into the violently brain-dead. A handful of outnumbered astronauts awaken intact from their artificial slumber to find themselves pitted against murderous zombies running amok on the ship.

In his intro, Wes calls CONTAINMENT, “Some of the best visual storytelling in years. Eric Red takes no prisoners. Read it with the lights on. Read it with a friend so you are not alone afterwards. Won’t matter. You still won’t be able to sleep afterwards. What better way to spend your remaining moments?”

The graphic novel has been out of print and a high-priced collectable for years, and I’m thrilled it will once again be widely available. This a zombie saga unlike any you have read before, and is one of my all-time favorite projects. Big thanks to SST publisher Paul Fry!

This time it’s bigger action, more werewolves, more guns, and much more Werewolf Western fun! More to come.

Here’s what people are saying about the book:

“THE GUNS OF SANTA SANGRE is an old-fashioned, well-made dime novel, doing Louis L’Amour, Elmore Leonard and Richard Matheson proud.”             – Bookgasm

“Bloody fights, desert vistas, a touch of romance, and plenty of werewolf action make THE GUNS OF SANTA SANGRE a fast-paced adventure. Screenwriter and author Red (DON’T STAND SO CLOSE) delivers a supernatural Western that should appeal to fans of the growing “weird West” genre. – Library Journal

“Imagine THE MAGIFICENT SEVEN mixed with DOG SOLDIERS and you’ve got Eric Red’s THE GUNS OF SANTA SANGRE.  It’s full of classic horror moments, non-stop action, and characters pushed to the edge. Three outlaws are hired by a young woman to protect her village from what she claims is a pack of werewolves. Seeing it as an easy job for three gunslingers looking to make some quick coin, they begin a journey that will forever change the way they see the world. Filled with action set pieces and terrifying monsters that are ready-made for big screen adaptation, GUNS is a fun and exciting read that no horror fan should miss.” – Famous Monsters of Filmland

“In our mythos of the Old West, there are bad guys and even badder guys,  But Eric Red’s are the biggest, baddest guys of all…” – Jack Ketchum.

“With THE GUNS OF SANTA SANGRE, Eric Red delivers a wild mash-up of action-thriller and bloody horror. This one really digs its claws into you from page one to last bite. Fast, furious, and wickedly fun. Highly recommended.” – Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of FIRE & ASH and EXTINCTION MACHINE

“It’s THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN meets DOG SOLDIERS! Taut, action packed and gory as hell! I couldn’t put it down!” – Arrow In The Head at JoBlo.com.
